Introduction:

So, you just found your dream home and signed the papers. Congrats! Moving into a new place is a huge, heartwarming experience in itself, and it can be a lot of fun sprucing up the space the way you imagine it to be. Before we get there, though, it’s super important that you deep clean the house before moving in, not just for hygiene purposes but also to give it a spanking new feel!

My partner and I rented a cosy one-bedroom space last August, and the process was really quick and smooth because we made sure to deep clean before moving in. How did we manage to do it? Well, we researched for fast, efficient ways to deep clean a new house online, and felt that these 5 cleaning tips for a new home below came in most useful for us. That’s why I want to share them with you guys and also add my two cents to make your own move-in an enjoyable and fast one!

Things You Need:

Before we get there, let’s take a look at the cleaning supplies you’ll need to get the house up and running in no time. Here’s a list of things you need to clean your house:

Do note that this is non-exhaustive – of course, you’re free to add on to the list if you feel that you need more equipment, depending on the size of your new place! Now, let’s move on to the goodies you’re actually here for.

1. Pack only the essentials

Unless your new home is massive with lots of floor space, packing only the essentials will help keep the space empty and free while you’re deep cleaning a new apartment. Chances are that you’ll spend the first few days wiping down everything – from the walls down to that side table by the couch. So the best way to clean a house before moving in is to ensure you can reach all these spots easily without having to move tons of boxes around!

And what is considered essential, you might ask? Here’s a non-exhaustive list of things you need for a new apartment on the first days of moving in:

2. Clean from the top to the bottom

And by the top, I mean the ceiling! You’d be surprised at the amount of dust that can collect up there, especially at the corners where spiders often spin their webs. Ceiling fans are also hot spots, and it’s one of the furniture that is easily overlooked during everyday cleaning. Going from top to bottom thus ensures all the dust that needs to be cleared is on the floor when you finish that last floor mop for the day.

3. Start with cleaning the kitchen

The kitchen can be a grimy place due to all the foods we handle, especially if we don’t wipe down the counters and appliances after cooking up a storm. It’s also the room with the most number of knick knacks, items, and knobs, so you might want to start off here while your energy is at its peak and move on to easier rooms after.

4. Unclog all drains

This is an interesting tip because you might not realize there is a need to, until your sink suddenly starts clogging up one day while you’re doing the dishes (yes, true story). Depending on how old your new home is, the kitchen and toilet drains can easily get clogged up over the years from previous tenants living there. So just to be sure, do grab baking soda and vinegar and give the drains a quick washdown while you’re cleaning your new home!

5. Disinfect everything

You never know what previous tenants were up to when they lived in the apartment…so just to be safe, disinfect everything from toilet seats, the couch, to the itty bitty things like doorknobs and switches. Anything that we would touch, really.

6. (optional) Roll a pineapple for good luck!

It’s a widely popular Singaporean belief that rolling a pineapple in your new home will help bring good luck and prosperity. Remember to yell auspicious phrases 龙马精神, 财源广进 and 招财进宝 when you do!

Conclusion:

And there you have it! No matter whether you’re moving into a new apartment or an old one, deep cleaning a new house can be a daunting, tedious task for first-time home owners because there’s so much to do. However, it’s critical that you go through this process the first time you move in, so that by the time you settle in with an ice-cold beer your new place is spick and span.
